dōu v/s duō (都 vs 多)

Two Tiny Chinese Words That Beginners Constantly Mix Up

If you're learning Chinese, you've probably already met these two little troublemakers:

都 (dōu) and 多 (duō).

They sound almost the same, they're both very common, and if you're at HSK 1, it's ridiculously easy to mix them up.

So here's the easiest way to remember them:

都 = all 多 = many / more

That's the basic difference.

都 (dōu) = ALL

Use 都 when you're talking about everyone or everything in a group.

我们都喜欢。Wǒmen dōu xǐhuan.We all like it.

他们都是学生。Tāmen dōu shì xuéshēng.They are all students.

Think of 都 as:

"Every one of them."

So if you have three friends and all three like coffee:

他们都喜欢咖啡。(They all like coffee).

多 (duō) = MANY / MORE

多 is about how much or how many.

很多人。Hěn duō rén (Many people)

很多钱。Hěn duō qián. (A lot of money)

You can also use it to mean "more":

多喝水。Duō hē shuǐ (Drink more water)

So think of 多 as:

"A lot of it."

The Easiest way to see the difference between dōu v/s duō

Imagine a room full of people. They are all my students. And they are all sitting. YOu are talking about all people in the room (except for me in this case).

他们都坐着。 (Tāmen dōu zuòzhe.) - They are all sitting.

Now imagine the same room again. They are still my students. But now instead of all people (my students), many people are sitting.

很多人坐着。 (Hěn duō rén zuòzhe.) - Many people are sitting.

And there's a fun reason the characters look so different

多 is an ancient character whose original form is generally thought to show two pieces of meat. Why two pieces? Because having lots of meat meant you had plenty. So the meaning gradually became many / much / more.

都 is a little more complicated. The character is also used for dū, meaning a capital or major city: 首都 (shǒudū) = capital city.

But the dōu you see all the time at HSK 1 means all:

我们都…… = We all...

So when you're learning Chinese, don't worry about memorising every historical detail.

Just remember:

🧑🧑🧑 都 = ALL of them 🍖🍖 多 = A LOT

And if you still mix dōu v/s duō up tomorrow?
