Should I study for Old HSK 2.0 or New HSK 3.0?
Updated: 7 days ago
Last week a student sent me a voice note at 1am in the night. It said, "lǎoshī, I just saw HSK exam is changing - have I been studying for the wrong HSK all this while?"
I understand the panic. The internet has done a very good job of creating it. So this week, I decided to do what any good Mandarin instructor should - I read the official and updated new syllabus - all 406 pages - so you don't have to. . 不客气 (bú kèqi).
If you still want to read or glance through the new HSK 3.0 syllabus, I've included it below.

When does the New HSK 3.0 actually start?
The confusion begins right here. The cover of the syllabus says it was published in November 2025 and implemented from July 2026. Most websites and blogs on the internet stopped reading there, and wrote - "New HSK 3.0 starts in July 2026". WRONG!
The new-format exam is scheduled to start on 13 December 2026, and paper-test registration for that sitting closes on 16 November 2026 . Until the switch, the exam you sit is the same HSK 2.0 that has been running since the year 2010.
So if you have already booked an exam for this year for on or before 13 December 2026, nothing changes for you. Breathe! Here's the link for the official press release - https://www.chinesetest.cn/news/51336883.
HSK 3.0 vs HSK 3
If you're learning Chinese, you've probably seen all of these:
HSK 1
HSK 2
HSK 3
HSK 1.0
HSK 2.0
HSK 3.0
and yes, it is unnecessarily confusing. So let me clear this up once and for all:
HSK 3 is a level - it sits between HSK 2 level and HSK 4 level.
HSK 3.0 is a version of the HSK examination system.
So what is HSK 1.0 and HSK 2.0?
The HSK system that most Chinese learners know today is generally referred to as HSK 2.0.
It is the six-level system: HSK 1→ HSK 2→ HSK 3→ HSK 4→ HSK 5→ HSK 6.
If I say today: “I'm HSK 5 certified”, I am talking about proficiency Level 5 of HSK 2.0 examination system.
The first HSK (HSK 1.0) system started back in the 1980s. The second version of the exam, HSK 2.0 replaced HSK 1.0 in 2010.
This year, on 13 December 2026, we have HSK 3.0 coming up. The new framework is officially described as: 3 stages + 9 levels So we're moving away from the familiar six-level structure toward a much broader system.
So remember, if someone tells you:
“I'm studying for HSK 3.”
They're almost certainly talking about Level 3 proficiency.
When someone says:
“I'm preparing for HSK 3.0.”
They're talking about the new version of the HSK system.
What changed in the New HSK 3.0 System?
Levels: There will be nine levels instead of six. Levels 1 to 6 keep their names. Levels 7, 8 and 9 are one combined band for advanced learners, and they did not exist before. So now in HSK 3.0 system, we have nine proficiency levels: HSK 1, HSK 2, HSK 3, HSK 4, HSK 5, HSK 6, HSK 7, HSK 8 and HSK 9.
Words. Compared to the old exam, there are more words at every level. HSK 1 goes from 150 to 300 words, HSK 2 from 300 to 500, and HSK 3 from 600 to 1,000. HSK 4 goes from 1,200 to 2,000, HSK 5 from 2,500 to 3,600, and HSK 6 from 5,000 to 5,400. HSK 7–9 are new, with 11,000 words in total.

change in number of words btw HSK 2.0 vs HSK 3.0
Characters: You have two character lists in HSK 3.0 instead of one character list in HSK 2.0. There are now characters you must recognise and characters you must write by hand in HSK 3.0. Level 1 asks you to recognise 246 characters. Levels 1 and 2 together ask you to handwrite only 100 characters, and they are the friendly ones: 你 (nǐ), 我 (wǒ), 好 (hǎo), 中 (zhōng), 字 (zì). This means Reading comes before Writing in the new examination version, which I personally think, is how it should always have been.
Tasks vs Lists: This is the change I personally care about most. The new HSK 3.0 syllabus describes Level 1 as 15 things you can do, not 300 words you know. Task number one is asking and answering basic questions about yourself - your name, nationality, age, family, etc. So there is more meaning and practicality in each level now instead of randomness.
Vocabulary: Finally, the new and updated vocabulary lives in this decade.
扫码 (sǎomǎ, scan a QR code) and 网购 (wǎnggòu, online shopping) are in at Level 4.
点赞 (diǎnzàn, to like a post) is Level 5.
人工智能 (réngōng zhìnéng, artificial intelligence) is Level 6.
And yet 传真 (chuánzhēn, fax) is still there at Level 6 (somebody on the committee is not ready to let go, and honestly, neither am I).
So, old HSK or new HSK?
That's the new HSK 3.0 in one sitting. Nine levels, two character lists, tasks instead of word lists, and a fax machine that refuses to retire.
But I haven't answered the question my student actually asked at 1am. Should she keep studying for HSK 2.0 or switch to HSK 3.0? The honest answer is: it depends on three things.
Whether you need a certificate before 13 December.
Whether the certificate you already hold still counts (short version: don't panic).
And why every website you've read gives you a different word count for the same level, which is a story about two drafts that I'll tell properly.
I'll cover these in the next part of this blog - old HSK or new HSK, who should sit which, what the speaking and handwriting expectations really look like, and what I'm changing in my own classes because of it.
Until then, 再见 (zàijiàn), and see you in Part 2.
